Jumpy Jumptime, A Unreal Engine Based Jump and Run, Puzzle and Platformer Game

JUMPY JUMPTIME
Hi guys and welcome to my new game Jumpy Jumptime!

Some of you will know me from the “Moonstone Remake” project.

While the Moonstone Remake is waiting for it’s further development, I’m gaining experience in coding& blueprinting inside Unreal Engine and this time I’m doing everything on my own. My coder buddy Luis helped me this time only with things I couldn’t do myself as a blueprint novice. So with the more difficult functions like the build mode.

The graphics are reminiscent of Minecraft and are driven by the new Unreal Engine 5.2. And yes, the blades of grass were placed on each floating island as a patch by hand. I wanted to exclude that single blades of grass intersect. That was the reason why I didn’t do this task with the Foliage Tool.

To clarify in advance why the name has similarities with the game “Poppy Playtime.” There is a simple reason for that. It is neither the graphics, nor the story, nor the atmosphere. As a solo developer you should focus on creating something small but nice. “Skyrim only better” is just not in it. And since Poppy Playtime was and is a short but successful game, I thought to name my game in this style. The game is planned to be about one to two hours long.

What is it about?

In Jumpy Jumptime you play a cute little alien, named Jumpy, who crashed with his UFO somewhere between heaven and earth and now has the task to find his UFO ship parts, repair the UFO and fly back to his home planet. The whole thing is thus a combination of precise jump and run interludes, easy to moderately difficult puzzles and platforms.

“Jumping my way through the level, I quickly realize that Jumpy would also make a good speedrunning game.”

Since Jumpy Jumptime is played from the first person, you will hardly or rarely get to see Jumpy. Nevertheless, there is a fixed vision of his appearance and sidescroller inserts would also be possible, which is why Jumpy already exists as a 3D model :slightly_smiling_face:

Sometimes Jumpy has to rely on the help of others.

Is that all?

Roughly described, yes!

But please don’t imagine the game to be too easy. The graphics may be deceiving. But the jump and run interludes get more difficult from platform to platform. If you don’t have the right touch, you’ll quickly end up under an island and start the level all over again. Only collected items and completed conversations with NPCs are saved, the player’s position is not saved. This has an advantage: Every time you fall down, you get better and more ambitious :slightly_smiling_face:

The behavior of the platforms becomes more difficult as the level progresses. For example, they start to rotate or move. Correct landings must be practiced.

Ah, here’s a switch…that’s bound to get us somewhere…

Is there more than just the shovel?

The shovel is the elementary item of the game. With it, you can find “earth”, dig it up and use it to build a path to the next platform. Besides the shovel, other tools are already implemented in the game. For example, a metal detector.

The metal detector is used to hunt for coins, among other things.

Here it goes on only with a key…good that we have found this already.

The game sometimes gives you valuable tips.

Some islands host mechanics to advance further in the game.

And to make it even more difficult, it also gets dark in the course of the game. Don’t worry: I’ve thought about fireflies, too, only I haven’t incorporated them into the level yet.

A few final words…

My goal is definitely to register a trade and sell the game on Itch, Steam and the Epic Store. I’m currently just wondering if it should be an Early Access title or if I should completely finish the game and then release it. My hope is that it will get hyped and then I can go completely independent with a studio. Because I have always worked on it after my full time job, on weekends and holidays.

Finally, here’s a video with a few minutes of gameplay. Please subscribe to the channel, leave a like, comment and spread the word about Jumpy Jumptime.

Thank you so much!

And yes, I did the background loop myself as well. I used Reason for it and got inspired by Sykrim’s Secunda and Minecraft music

Hi there @Gazu,

Hope you’re doing well and having a fantastic week so far!

This is an absolutely precious take on a Minecraft-esque platformer. The art style, environment, and music create that peaceful feeling we all have come to expect from Minecraft. But there’s also a dreamy element to your project (probably has something to do with the whole floating among the clouds thing :cloud: :joy:) that elevates it for me. Beyond the visuals, the gameplay mechanics of getting abilities from flowers and using “build mode” to get across a fallen bridge are kind of brilliant.
This game seems incredibly charming, fun, and nostalgic but new. Definitely going to have to keep this one on my radar.

Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait to see people as stoked about this as I am!

Hi @PresumptivePanda
thank you for your kind words :dizzy: :innocent:

I share the same opinion as you. It is some kind of nostalgic but new. I think that this was and is the goal of Jumpy. I will keep you up to date in this thread about the development of Jumpy Jumptime!

Thanks once again! :innocent:

I don’t know which part to begin with this @Gazu . I am adoring the aesthetic wholeheartedly. Similar to Panda I get this air of dreaminess that makes me want to float away with the music. I’m curious if other sections will have different feelings to them as you develop.

Out of curiosity, would there be any plans to add cosmetics to the game? For example different shovel cosmetics. I think the game is delightful without them as is, but I was curious if that was something thought about as I know it’s popular to do so and I think the cute style would make for some cute section themed tools!

Thank you very much for the kind words @The_M0ss_Man

Cosmetics were not planned so. Would not that take the nostalgia?
But it’s an idea to build on as production progresses. Thanks a lot for that!

I think the most important thing is to complete the level first. Be it the length of the game, the graphics and the lighting or the game design.
After that I could imagine adding more nice things.

An idea that I definitely want to implement is that you can not only find coins with the metal detector, but also certain objects that might help you in some way in the game.

Thank you guys once again for the kind words,
Gazu

I see! My apologies @Gazu as I do agree with that. It would take from the nostalgia but as mentioned I know it’s become popular and was curious if you planned any. I still love it regardless of course. :green_heart:

I also think the additional option for finding items with the metal detector could prove fun. Would add some variety use to the metal detector I think. Please keep up the good work as I know I’m thrilled to see more~!

Naah, nothing to apologize for @The_M0ss_Man
Thank you for your kind words!

What I had also thought about were cosmetic items for Jumpy himself.

For example a new haircut as an item to collect, sunglasses or a baseball cap.

But that would only work if I would include the sidescroller part. And I’m not sure about that yet. Otherwise the items wouldn’t make much sense.

Still have to think about it all!

Thank you,
Gazu

That’s such a cute idea @Gazu . Looking back at Jumpy’s model I can see him totally rocking a pair of sunglasses.

I’m eagerly looking forward to Jumpy Jumptime and it’s development. There are so many fun things about this project and you’re doing an awesome job so far. :star_struck:

Thanks @The_M0ss_Man :innocent:

Currently I use the time to beautify the appearance of the islands. I think the red and brown mushrooms are a good contrast to the evergreen. Now they only have to be placed on all islands by hand. Tedious, but fun nonetheless!

My wish for the Foliage Tool would be if it could recognize other meshes when placing them in order to avoid intersecting between individual meshes. For this reason alone, to be on the safe side, I placed the grass by hand.

I think that one or two more flowers and plants could improve the look even more.

Thank you,
Gazu

Hey there @Gazu !

I do love the additions of the mushrooms onto the islands. Placing them by hand can be a bit rough but I hope the hand placements won’t be too tedious. I often find a weird fixation when I do such type of work so I unfortunately love placing individual objects one by one, haha.

So far there is still this wonderful almost faerie appeal to it that I find absolutely charming. Going back on the nostalgia it makes me want to load up my old Minecraft worlds just by looking at it since I can’t explore the world yet.

Can’t wait for the next update you bring :green_heart:

Hey Guys,

at the moment i´m working on a larger Island with the ability to go swimming.
While the swimming mechanics work well, I now need more decorative meshes such as sea plants. Especially the distribution of the grass on the island cost me 3 days.

More coming soon.

Hi again @Gazu,

Just popping in to say how peaceful and beautiful this project is. The swimming mechanic definitely added to the dreaminess of the experience. Do you plan on adding glowing underwater plants? Or maybe even some fish?

Hey and thanks for your answer! @PresumptivePanda

Yes exactly, I have also thought of luminous underwater plants. Not only as decoration but also as a design element. The player is often guided by light somewhere through the level.

I also thought about fish. I’ll definitely try to include fish that might follow a spline and speed up briefly when touching the player.

Like the sheep in Forza Horizon that always avoid you when you try to run them over

Thanks once again,
Gazu

Both of those would be wonderful additions  Definitely will add to the beauty of the project.

Hey!
There is news about my game Jumpy Jumptime again. An old feature that I have now refreshed with better code is the hammer with which you can smash stones to solve puzzles or to find hidden objects.

But that’s not all. In addition to the hammer, it is now possible to move individual stones in order to solve puzzles.

I also worked on the graphics. The islands should now look much nicer and more contrasting thanks to some new flowers.

Of course I also recorded a current video to show all the new things in motion.

Have fun watching it!
