[Itemization] item_component.Drop() on an equipped item in a custom inventory doesn’t clear the player’s hands

Summary

item_component.Drop() on an equipped weapon in a custom Verse inventory leaves the weapon (or an empty holding pose) in the player’s hands

Verse

Steps to Reproduce

Setup: a custom inventory, made by subclassing inventory_component in Verse and attaching it under the player entity. Island Settings inventory configuration is set to “Empty”. Weapons are moved into this inventory and held with item_component.Equip().

Case A, a native Fortnite weapon:

  1. Pick up a weapon from an Item Spawner device so it lands in the custom inventory.
  2. Equip it from Verse with item_component.Equip(). The player holds it.
  3. Call item_component.Drop[Transform] on it from Verse, without calling Unequip() first.

Case B, a custom prefab weapon:

  1. Put a custom weapon prefab (an entity prefab with an item_component) into the custom inventory.
  2. Equip it with item_component.Equip().
  3. Call item_component.Drop[Transform] on it, without calling Unequip() first.

For comparison: with the native Battle Royale inventory configuration, and no custom inventory, step 3 of Case A works correctly.

Expected Result

Drop succeeds, the item appears in the world as a pickup, and the player’s hands are empty. This is what happens with the native Fortnite inventory.

Observed Result

Drop succeeds and the item appears in the world as a pickup, but the hands are not cleared:

  • Case A, native weapon: the weapon stays visible in the player’s hands. The ammo UI keeps showing, and the weapon can’t fire.
  • Case B, custom prefab weapon: the character stays in the weapon-holding pose with no weapon mesh (see screenshot).

Workaround

Call item_component.Unequip() on the item, in the same frame, before calling Drop. Both cases then behave correctly.

Additional Notes

Only the combination of a custom Verse inventory and Drop on an equipped item is affected. The same Drop call on the native BR inventory clears the hands correctly. It looks like Drop removes the item from the custom inventory without notifying whatever is holding the equipped weapon.
