hi everyone
I would like to know if mixamo 3d character creator is any good if its not what would you recommend
thanks in advance
I have had some experience with blender i like it and there plenty of tutorials arround on youtube.
But i dont know anyting bout mixamo
for an indie game its ok, like any “creation” program it has its limits, and you only get the LOD’s if you have the Pro version.
if your **** at making your own characters then it’s not a bad choice, there are other programs like “makehuman”
i suggest you take your time and try any free version you can find, then test them with the free anim starter set though you’ll either have to re-rig the characters or re-target the anims
Blender and MakeHuman seems way more better approach. With the rest money I think you can pay to someone at the polycount forum
The Autodesk Character Generator isn’t too bad; It will even give you face rigs, the only problem is the limited design and the fact you’ll most probably want to re-texture the character with higher quality texture maps.
I just bought the 25 dollar version of mixamo and I dont know where to download it,I download one called fuse basic but when I open it up its the same one I had as a demo so I dont know what to do
Yeah, it is the same version. You need the next package up to get the full version of FUSE
thanks for your answer,do you know if its possible to upgrade for the next package
I believe so, however downgrading again is much more difficult so beware…
does anyone know a site where you can get or buy clothes for character
thanks in advance
Hey everyone! from Mixamo here. Just wanted to clarify our offerings a bit!
You can upgrade (or downgrade) your Mixamo account any time. Our plans are contract and commitment free so you can swap around month to month as much as you’d like.
To get the full version of Fuse you’ll need to purchase the Indie level plan. This gives you expanded content and the ability to import your own 3D assets so you can create your own Fuse characters and clothing.
Both the starter and Indie plans also come with unlimited auto-rigging for your Fuse characters and animations included in their monthly bundle.
Fuse is a young program and we are working hard to expand it and our support for Epic’s epic engine as well so some upcoming features to Fuse will be expanded content and a UE4 specific skeleton download option.
now that would be something
Well the good news is Unreal 4 is modular so one is no longer limited to a single solution and one can use anything they wish that gets the job done. This change of how things goes from here to over there opens a boat load of options so sure Mixamo is an option based on the must have requirements of royalty free licensing.
Whats cool about Mixamo is it’s focus on video game character models, even though it uses the Mister potato head approach, and the main selling point I think is in expatiation of quality for the price.
Not really all that keen on subscription based services, it all adds up fast, but for the price the Indie package is on my shopping list just to add another option to our usable resource catalog.
MakeHuman in my opinion is not mature enough “yet” to be usable with out additional work. On the other hand it’s CC-Zero so if your into making a game on the cheap it’s probably the best option that fits this need.
As an opinion though the power tool as to parametric character design is Genesis which comes as part of the free Daz Studio download.
The downside is Daz Studio is a very complex application designed to meet a lot of different needs with a fair size learning curve.
Overall though for 99 bucks for quality that’s one hell of a deal.
I believe that you have to buy a separate license to use DAZ models in a game. Starting at $500 for the indie license.

Yes you do but still cheap depending on what you have in mind and it’s not an initial cost out of your pocket but a cost that can be deferred up to the day you release your game. Kind of like try before you buy as you are covered under the personal use license up till then.
If you want to use Genesis, which is state of the art, then the first purchase you will have to make is the body and head morph sets for the male and female Genesis base that will allow you to generate parameter driven characters. With the morph set you can create “any” character you want be it male, female, child, zombie, monsters, all off the same base that you can us as an injector in UE4 that will allow you to create thousands of unique characters during run time.
At its core what best describes Genesis is this.
You would still have to code the AI logic but the magic is Genesis is a “true” parametric character editor with a memory foot print equal to whats necessary to make a single channel pipeline functional.
Risking sounding like an ad this is how Assassins Creed can have 5000 NPC’s in one area with out bloating.
No disrespect but Mixamo can’t do that…yet.
Overall though I would say that a vending machine license is a good option as to buying what you need when you need it and not because you have to decided up front what best fits your need.
Just saying. ;D
Blender + MakeHuman (there are a few autorig addons for Blender also, but I’ve not tried them) + UE4 animation re-targeting = free alternative.
I have nothing against Mixamo, I did not tried FUSE to be honest, seems to do a good job. Only think I don’t like at Mixamo is pricing model.
But don’t forget there is also IKinema doing same thing for $19.
About DAZ, you need to own the Game Developer License (indie or pro, $500 or $2500 i think) then you need to own DAZ figures. AND you need to own DAZ Decimator plugin for meshes! (Also about $500). Not cheap at all if you sum up all licenses. But however, once you own those, you can do a lot of things:)
you don’t need decimator, you get far better results using the reduce tool in maya. you can apply the reduce to the different parts of the character as you like and the resulting topology is far superior. there is some work to this approach but you get the best of both worlds. and now with the new retargeting features in UE4 it should be easier to retarget animations to the Genesis skeletons.
That is true as far as using Daz IP content goes but Daz Studio is free period and to explain in full what it can do would take about as much time as it would to take to explain all of the things one could do with say Blender or 3ds Max.
{in_general_mode}
What one would be paying for is a license to use Genesis as a parametric character modeler that is state of the art as far as production quality goes but there are low cost or even free alternatives.
An example.
Free but of course it always comes back to licensing as to fair use.
Hi,
I’ve been working with the folks from Mixamo since about April of this year and I think you will find that they are working hard to make their character program Fuse more friendly to UE4. They have a great bunch of folks in the support department (i.e. Chantel Benson, Tyler Georgeson and Matthews) who have provided me with exceptional customer service. Like said, Fuse is a young program. The upcoming 1.3 version should have some more improvements coming so I would highly recommend you stick with Mixamo.
If only their running animations would actually try to put the feet below the center of gravity, rather than a foot to the side on each side… The default walking/running animations look like lumbering oafs or great monkeys, not like normal human beings!
