Is it possible to have hair strands take on the same color as the mesh underneath them?

For example, if I’m making a tiger. I have the skin and stripes uv-mapped, so the material shows perfectly on the mesh. But when I import the fur particle system over from Blender, when I attach the same striped texture to the hair material, it doesn’t work (just shows up as brown for some reason). Any idea what I’m doing wrong?
