I have created a scene for the latest Sketchfab movie contest that I based on the Tesseract scene from Interstellar. As the main platform was Sketchfab, I thought I could target Gear VR as well to see what I can squeeze out of the machine. I have been working with Gear VR for a few months now, so I know it is very capable device, but I have to tell the result surprised me. It runs with nearly stable 30 FPS on an S7 using 4.14 preview 2 with HDR and Bloom turned on. Mostly there is no noticeable lag, but some screen tearing appears here and there. That’s actually something I have been struggling with for a while. There were quite a few times when we were far from hammering the performance limit, the game was running around 60 FPS but there was some serious screen tearing constantly on the left side of the screen. Luckily, it seems that 4.14 improved quite a lot, but I still have no idea what’s the root of the issue. I’m pretty sure it’s UE4 related problem as I saw the same thing on a published game (Colab). Of course they managed to keep it on a just acceptable level.
Anyways, you can check out the scene on Sketchfab: https://goo.gl/CPmz0D
The DOF is there only for the render images of course.
I would be glad to hear your opinion! Also, I’m available now for some freelance stuff, so if somebody is looking for a helping hand, give me a shout. You can find more info and contact details in my portfolio: http://fisher007.allyou.net/
