Instensity of light near mesh impacting appearance?

I’m attempting to have a ceiling light reflect onto the floor below. The static mesh itself is modeled directly after a real world light that has a bent metal plane curving down (as seen in the pic), causing the light embedded in it to reflect nicely. To replicate this, I built the mesh, then placed an elongated point light into the crevice of the fixture. The problem is that when I build the level, the plane closest to the light turns nearly completely black. I don’t believe it’s a lightmap issue, as I have some experience with that and set this mesh up properly in 3DS Max. Could it be that when a light is placed so close to a reflective mesh the intensity is too much to render correctly?
