Improving Iteration Speed on Platforms/Consoles

Hi - I wanted to inquire to see if any major efforts are underway at Epic to improve iteration on external platforms (consoles in particular). It’s also possible there are more rapid workflows available that we’re just unaware of or not taking advantage of. We are currently mostly relying on iterative & multi-process cooks to test on platforms, but it’s still a dreadfully slow workflow compared to most console-focused environments. From some past testing, cook-on-the-fly didn’t offer any significant improvements, but perhaps that’s changed.

Would be great to get insight on these two questions:

  • What is the most rapid workflow for iterating on platforms/consoles (optimizing for a small number of asset/code changes per iteration)?
  • Is Epic engaging in or planning any major work in this area? Please let us know if so, so we can determine if we want to put heavy investment into it on our end.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

To answer your first questions, I’d say that in 5.5, you are a bit limited since the tech was pretty new, but using zen streaming and multi-process cooking might improve your iteration time for some use cases, but it’s probably buggy and if I remember well, zen streaming was not available on all consoles. In 5.6 and 5.7, things continued to improve and this is still in development.

Epic is actively working to improve the iteration time on Console using the following ideas:

I strongly recommend to look at the live presentations I linked below. The topic is covered in more detail (and maybe contains information I forgot) by the field experts. I linked the 5.5 and 5.6 presentations.

Patrick
