Hey guys,
I know that this has been discussed already, but I still can’t decide to use Quixel 2 or Substance.
For me the pros / cons are:
Substance:
Pros:
Substance Live, own what you paid for subscription model.
Substance has no limits, I feel that this is more powerful than Quixel. I bet you can also achieve stylized pbr material with Designer.
The workflow of combining Substance Designer and Painter is great and makes everything easier.
Integrated Plugin makes it easy to import materials. No need for wiring up you textures.
Trial Version.
B2M really helps sometimes.
You can be creative.
OMG, the training content…
procedural texturing.
Cons:
Substance Painter just makes me feel dizzy. There are so many buttons, options, tabs and what not. I don’t feel like jumping in and just starting to paint.
Its hard/ time consuming to create additional details, if you want to have custom shapes etc. <— This is something thta really bothers me
Compared to Quixel 2 (from what I have seen) it takes longer to texture.
Quixel 2:
Pros:
NDO is cool (from what I have seen). <— Thats great actually.
From the videos I have seen I kind of get the feeling that you just slam a material on your object and everything looks good already. Then you can just paint onto the meshes to make it look even better.
Huge amount of materials to choose from.
Compared to Substance its cheap (80$ currently)
Cons:
Photoshop prerequisite. (I hate that, I don’t want to pay for something forever.)
You are kinda limited to photorealism (are you?)
No Plugin for UE4.
So it really depends on the fact that you can add additional details through Ndo and in Substance you can’t.
I wanted to know your opinions on the software and what to prefer. What should I buy?
You don’t have to decide yet
Just try the both, you will see AFTER…Substance is more procedural, Quixel is more photo source scan friendly…the both are super cool
I’ve tried Substance Painter and liked it, but haven’t really had to use it for anything substantial. I haven’t used anything else, so id suggest to try demos for a while if you can.
I love the idea of Quixel but my god… it still crashes constantly and is highly unstable no matter the updates they bring out. The whole integration with Photoshop is a nightmare usability and performance wise. 3DO is great and you can get results quickly but there hasn’t been a single project where it hasn’t crashed.
For handpainted meshes 3DCoat all the way btw! For more realistic PBR materials I would go with Painter/Designer. The whole industry seems to be steering into the procedurally created workflow and Designer/painter fits into that perfectly. Now is the best time to learn it
I own both and decided to use Substance Painter and keep Suite 2 only for some exceptional assets.
Substance painter is better in my opinion because:
It’s standalone software
Is stable all the way, no crashes like in suite 2
Has Iray
Bakes really neat maps
Mask generators work in real time, unlike suite 2
Managing and grouping layers is too easy and does not break anything
Once you learn it it’s VERY fast to work with.
It’s more consistent with UE4
You can customize the viewport all the way and use custom HDRi. You still can’t import custom HDRi in suite 2 which is really funny because then you don’t know how the asset looks in game engine.
Has a lot of cool little features like Lazy Mouse, particle brushes, Substance Share etc.
…
But still, you might just like Suite 2 more like many others so it’s totally up to you and not what we say really.
