A little back story, I had Unreal Engine 4.8 on my laptop but then my hard drive crashed and I lost everything. Now with this new hard drive, I now have Unreal Engine 4.8.1 and I’m forced to start all over from what I was doing with no problem. Now, my problem would be when I build light and only that. Every time I hit “Build Lighting Only” the program tells me that it’s building light, but then stays at 33%, freezes, and crashes. I would like some help, please and thank you!!
Having the exact same issue, just stopping sometimes at 34% also Very frustrating issue, I can’t building lighting without it vomiting on me. Think it has to do something with using up too much RAM.
Anyway It pretty much stopped all development for me, it’s really frustrating not being able to build the lighting. Also would like to say I don’t get any sort of crash report whatsoever, I just get a standard “Unreal Engine 4 has stopped working” message from Windows.
Running Windows 7 Pro, 8GB RAM, Core i7 @ 2.90 GHz, Intel HD Graphics 4600.
That literally is what is happening to me, the freeze, the crash, and the windows error message right at the end. Thank you for your input!
Hello SoraJr and ngage -
We have actually tracked down this issue. It is a conflict in the drivers for the Intel Integrated Grpahics Drivers. Downloading the newest version of the drivers which can be found here:
will fix the crashing and allow you to continue to build lighting.
I should note that other users have reported that Intel (or their computer/laptop manufacturer) is telling them that they do not need an update. If this is the case, please check to make sure that your driver version is below the 15.36.21.64.4222 driver number. If it is at that driver number and you are still having this issue, please let us know. If not, one user had to force install the new update by downgrading his driver to an older version and then manually installing the driver linked above.

Thank you for your help, but any diver software or update from intel’s website won’t help me. I have a HP ENVY 15 which has a customizable driver for the HD display, I already updated the driver from the HP support website since I got my laptop back. If it helps, everytime I startup my laptop I get a error message saying “igfxtray.exe has stopped working”
Worked for me! Thanks so much, I can finally get back to developing!
Hi SoraJr -
The igfxtray.exe is a component of the Intel Integrated Graphics Driver which your HP Envy uses. If you are unable to get the newest drivers from Intel you will need to contact your PC Manufacturer in order to get the latest driver, otherwise you will be unable to build lighting as long as you are on that particular build of the Intel Graphics Driver.
Thank You
Eric Ketchum
I’ve updated my driver from the HP support site, but still having the lighting not being built.
Hi SoraJr -
Can you run your DXDIAG and post the results here?
Thank You
Eric Ketchum
I uploaded the text file I saved from the tool.
This is strange because I’m using the same laptop before my harddrive crashed and I didn’t have any problems until now. Ok, thank you for time and input.
Hi SoraJr -
I took a look at your DXDIAG just to confirm that there was nothing else that could be causing you an issue, but it is unfortunately an issue with your Intel Integrated Graphics Card. I relaize that the HP Website lists the Version 10.18.10.3574 as Updated on July 9th but if you look at the details it actually was released on May 23, 2014. Following the link above and installing the Intel Driver directly from Intel will correct this issue for you.
If you are still uncomfortable with installing a driver from Intel, I would recommend contacting HP Support for your laptop about the correct course of action.
Thank You -

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have successfully updated my video card driver. I went to device manager, and switched from Intel HD Graphics to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. Then I used the link provided above and updated my driver. Now I can build lighting, no problem! Thanks again guys!
Thank you Eric Ketchum! This worked for my girlfriend’s Envy laptop.
If anyone is curious, here’s what I did:
-
Download the driver per Eric’s link above
-
go to Device Manager
-
Click display adapters
-
double click on the Intel HD Graphics 4600 item
-
click rollback update
-
click update driver
-
search for the downloaded file from the link
Hi everyone! I got the same problem with Windows 10 Pro and Nvidia GTX 970.
I have the same problem and cannot replace my driver with the version mentioned below. I have a Dell Latitude and I cannot use any generic drivers. According to Dell my drivers are up to date.
