How to reduce the scene poly count at render time

I am trying to render out the last 100 frames of my environment. Its a really large landscape and I thinks crashing and freezing because there are too many tris or polys. Is there a command line to reduce the overall number or limit the number? If so what is that command.

You can reduce the overall number of tris (LODs being used) and other settings with the Scalability Options:
