How to properly use distance field shadows



I want to use distance field shadows for large area lights, to get cheap realtime soft shadows in VR.

It mostly works great, however I noticed that some objects show this jagged shadows when light is shining on them from certain angle like this box in the images.

And in another case an object was casting this blocky shadow only partially. But only while being viewed from a distance and only in VR.

I tried changing object scale, raising distance field resolution… I haven’t found a solution to this.

Is this a known limitation, or bug, or is there something I’m overlooking while trying to use these shadows?

Same problem, but in VR,. been banging my head on the wall trying to figure out this issue. its extremly distracting in VR
