How to make an object invisible in render but fully impart lighting influence in scene?

Hi, coming along with my first UE project (for a personal filmmakling project) thansk to all the help on this forum and reddit!

I have an animation I am adding to real footage. I created basic geometry to mimic part of the real footage. In this case a rock entryway. I added the geometry so that the animated figure would be darker in the entryway.

I chose the entry to be hidden in game, and checked off the box that says the actor can Affect Indirect Lighting While Hidden, also checked box to cast hidden shadow.

But when I do this, the entry doesn’t seem to have any effect on lighting.

I attached screenshot that shows a given frame. Left is with the entry as hidden actor, right is with the entry not hidden. You can see that with the entry rendered, the cat figure is

darker.

Any idea how to make an actor hidden, but in terms of lighting infleunce behave 100% the same way it behaves when actually visible in a scene?

Screenshot attached.

thanks

Hello,

Actually I can’t see anything.

Can you repost a clearer photo or video/link to video?

Hi, here is link:

The difference is subtle, but mainly I am trying to understand how to do this in a way that guarantees expected result.

From what I read, I thoguht I was doing things as needed, but when I noticed the difference, I realized the result is not as expected. On right side, the yellow tones are darker. If things are working as expected, I would expect the cat on left and right to look identical.

The quality isn’t great, as this is part of a camera move, so UE is applying a lot of motion blur, as at this moment in the footage my camera movement was rather quick.

thanks

You can disable motion blur:

Disable Motion Blur

And/Or upload a video or link to a video.

If I can’t see what is going on, I can’t understand what is actually happening. You may think taking your word for it is enough, but the application is VERY complicated, so all information is critical in rooting out your issue.

Hi, ok, will revisit this scene. What UE settings should I show? Everythig under lighting and render for the entryway?

thanks again!

Ideally you would post two videos (or Youtube links to videos). That way I can see how the lighting behaves in real time. A snapshot can’t really tell me everything, so then I’d have to keep asking follow-up questions. It’s very inefficient.
