How to get smaller foliages to spawn arround large trees using the procedural foliage tool

Anyone know how to get smaller foliages to spawn arround large trees using the procedural foliage tool in unreal engine 4? here is what my trees look like and the settings

and here are the settings for the ferns (the smaller mesh i’m using to test spawning). i want it to grow only around trees.

i assumed i would have to set the collision radius of the trees to about 300 so trees are spaced 300 cm apart, then the shade radius of the trees to 150cm, then in the fern’s settings i would enable grow in shade box so that the ferns would only grow in the shade. but that doesnt work

first off, if i set it to how i described (300 colision, 150 shade) my spawner only spawns two trees for some reason instead all of the 8 i set which makes it really repetitive. and for secondly, even tho i enabled the ferns to only grow in shade, it still only starts growing a bit away from the tree

so, TL;DR, anyone know how to get smaller plants to grow next to bigger plants in unreal engine 4?

The Colision Radius is for the Trunk and the Shade Radius is for the leaves.

If Collision and Shade are both 300 there is no free space.
For Trees it should more like Collision: 50 and Shade: 1000 depending on the Tree
