How to get rid of intense bloom of death?

So I am really just starting out with UE4 and I have hit an extremely basic problem. Here’s what I did:

  1. Created a new level
  2. Added a cube for the floor
  3. Added a directional light
  4. Added a cylinder
  5. Pressed play

Here is the result:

I really don’t get what’s causing this much bloom… do I need to add a post-process volume of some sort? Is this really UE4’s default value for bloom?

You can add a Post Process Volume and adjust the settings for Bloom. You may also want to consider adjusting the Auto Exposure (Eye Adaptation) values for Min and Max brightness to 1.0 while developing.

Set the volume to be Unbound or make it large enough to encapsulate anywhere your camera will be.
