How to fix bad pixelated lens flare in movie render queue in UE 5.2.1?

I have been struggling with this way too many days in UE5.2.1. Lens flare generates really bad artifacts.

I am rendering a cinematic sequence via the movie render queue to EXR. Anti-aliasing uses 32 temporal steps and the anti-alias method is overridden to None.

Bloom is set to convolution. Lens flare has a custom 128x128 bokeh shape - this was to test whether it was actually using the postprocess options from the cine camera actor. The problem is also present with the default bokeh shape.

Threshold settings for both bloom and lens flare are the default. All the usual movie render queue options are turned on, e.g. game overrides, some custom console variables - although they are probably redundant with the game override.

This pixelated and broken lens flare pops up for a single frame and then disappears. On a sequence of 400 frames, this effect happens 5 - 6 times on single frames.

As you can see the scene does not have any strong lights and an option would be to completely turn off lens flare but I would really like to understand the problem before moving on to another scene.

I am very curious whether anyone here has an idea. I have seen a couple of posts on related topics but as far as I can tell nobody has come up with a solution.

Any suggestions or ideas? Thank you!

For what it’s worth, the problem goes away when setting r.TemporalAASamples to 32 and switching anti-aliasing from None to TAA. However, that has other odd side effects, e.g. volumetric light scattering is much much weaker than before.

Help? :grinning:

Did you ever solve this? I’m getting odd purple artifacts from bloom and lens flare in high quality renders
