How to create an underwater World/Game the "right" way ?

Hi all,

I just finished the 3D assets of my first level from my Indie Game and decided to actually start my project now in UE5 ( yep… I’m one of those people who start with the Art first x) )

My Game is basically only underwater (deep underwater) where you play as an Anglerfish.

Now here the question I got in my mind… What would be the right way to make an underwater only game?

Here are my 2 thoughts:

Idea 1:
Basically giving the player the illusion of being underwater by using filters and distortion effects? The rest of the job would be done by the animations of the fish, the sound effects and the art assets (corals etc)

Idea 2:
Creating an ocean in UE 5 and pulling it aaaaaall the way up
Honestly… this sounds like a bad idea

  • What would be the best aproache ?
  • also since the game plays very deep in the ocean, there will be no sky with a sun and light will be basically placed all over the place where it makes sense + on the Anglerfishs “fishing rod”
Could that be problematic with lumen?

I appreciate every helpful comment =)

You might as well do 1. Because if you did 2, the underwater effects are achieved using 1.

So, postprocess effect is all you need.
