How to change material order from Maya to Unreal?

I’m importing a skeletal mesh (FBX) from Maya to UE 4.16 that has two materials but the material order in UE4 needs to be switched. No matter what I do, reimporting the mesh leaves the material order the same, even if I change the materials in Maya. The skin## suffix also no longer works. I’ve looked up the official documentation but the instructions are unclear, how can I reimport a skeletal mesh with a different material order?

The material assignment will be set in UE4 after the first import, so if you change the material order in Maya then it won’t change when you reimport because it will be referencing UE4 for what material slot was assigned. To change it you’ll need to delete the skeletal mesh and import it in again.
Or, you can open it in UE4 and just drag your material to the different slot to reassign it there.
