How to blend hair alpha smoothly?

Sorry, this was posted in the Content Creation forum as well but after reading the description for the Rendering forum, I thought it may be best posted here as well. I forgot to mention this there but I’m using version 4.9.2. Updating the engine seems to break our code, so we’re stuck with this version, at least for now. I know there’s a hair shader in newer versions but even if it’s good, it’s not available to us.

*Hello, everyone. I’ve searched for this for a while and am coming back to it again, still without an answer. When you use an opacity mask, how do you make it look nice and smooth instead of jagged? I used to think it was my textures and I was doing it wrong, but testing this in modelling software tells me otherwise. I could use this for many models, but at the moment I really need it for hair. I’ve tried the temporal AA dithering with some blur offset, as suggested on-line, but it produces a dotted texture that still looks rather poor. I’ve seen other people use this technique without such a dotty result and am not sure of the difference. Here’s my material and the result on the model:

Thanks a million.
