How to add Oculus Rift support?

Hey guys. First of all, I know nothing about what I actually need for this. I do not own an Oculus Rift or anything yet, I’m just simply asking what I’d need to buy in able to actually do this. I heard that there is development kit for the Oculus Rift. Is that needed to do this? Do I need to buy an Oculus Rift in addition to this, or does the development kit come with it? Once I have all that’s needed, how difficult is it to set up support for it? So that VR can be toggled on and off? Could you tell me some of the basic steps of how this would be done? Thanks!

Yes you would need a VR HMD (Head Mounted Display) such as the Oculus Rift or the HTC/Valve Vive.

Depending on what type of content you want to make you should also consider making sure you have something to emulate the game controllers which for both above mentioned companies would be a set of hand motion tracked ‘joysticks’ with directional sticks and buttons.

Oculus unfortunately just stopped selling the DK2 headset. The Vive one is a bit tricky to get your hands on, you can’t buy it you would have to contact them and convince them to give you a kit.
For the hand controllers there is not a set you can buy yet for the rift. You could use a ‘Razor Hydra’ which are inferior to the eventual things but passable as a standin. I just started using a PS3 Move setup with a UE4 community written plugin. If you score a Vive then that comes with their own controllers.

You can get DK2 and Hydras on Ebay.

If you are serious about this you really need to see your work through a headset it totally changes everything.

Cheers

Okay. I’m looking on eBay and I’m not really sure what I’m looking at here. What do I need for the game development and what do I need for the actual gameplay itself? What is the general cost for this?

The DK2 is the ‘development kit’ it is not a consumer entertainment device so only buy if you need it now to develop with.
For it there is good ‘official’ integrations for Unreal Engine and Unity. You go onto Oculus’ website and download the relevant SDK’s and runtimes and what not to set up for your PC.
I don’t know anything much about the Hydra integrations but they should be supported too in some form just check the UE/Unity forums.

There is no consumer Rift or Vive yet.

There’s also the ‘Gear VR’ mobile phone peripheral that you can read up on. That relies only on the phone to power the software you run on it.

Does the DK2 come with the actual headset that you put on to see the game?

Just google DK2 unboxing!

…apparently it does! Thanks! Also, what price should I expect to find this for on eBay? I’ve seen some at $800+ and some at $300… I’m not really sure what is what, so around what price would I find the DK2 for on eBay? Thanks again!
