How to add complex markings on a surface

Hey guys,

currentley I am working on an airport scenery. I build all the taxiways, aprons, etc. as a 3D model.
It was quite easy to set up the base concrete/ asphalt material that repeats along the whole model.

The difficult thing is to find a proper way how to place all the markings.
They are quite complex and there is no single piece that could be realised as a repeating texture.
So, how to add them? Using decals, or an own 3D model on top of the ground?

Anybosy who has suggestions or experiences with that?

You could do either, but I believe this is one of the exact scenarios for which decals were invented.
