how power or multiply nodes works in the material editor?

Hi guys!
Can anyone explain to me this behavior??

I expected the two vertical lines to stay the same when i applied power with exp=1 and I expected thinner vertical lines when i multiplied the result of the sine by itself (power with exp=2).
Sorry if it is too simple, but i cannnot find the answer.

Following the example in the page: Power of Base 0.5, Exp 2.0 is 0.25.
Power of base x, Exp 1.0 should be x, don’t it?. So, why i’m getting a different result in the picture?
