how do you create this dark effect on the top of a mesh in a top down game

One option is to use vertex painting, and painting all of them black.

Another is to only use point lights, not a top-down sunlight, and make all the light sources be below the top level of the meshes.

A third is to add a node in your material, which slams all pixels with a world space coordinate taller than some Z value, to black.
