How do I make my hair material look good?

I want to have a relatively Dragon Engine looking hair material for my project, so I try to make it translucent, it looks like this.

Not the result I desire so I go to use masked, it looks like this.

This may look kinda okay but it falls apart in other lighting setups.

It doesnt really look like how I want it to look, which is somewhat similar to my blender shader, which I think is somewhat accurate to the actual DE.

I want the hair texture’s alpha channel to have a smooth transition and not look like the cards are overlapping in a weird unnatural way, and also have smooth shadows as if it had subsurface scattering, anyone know how to do this?

Hi @Z64

Welcome to the Unreal Forum. I found https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog/realistic-hair-and-fur-with-unreal-engine-get-the-white-paper to be helpful to me when I was running into a similar issue.

this seems to talk only about grooming, but my model is using hair cards, so I wanted to know how to make the hair look good using cards only

Wait I think I figured out what I really wanted. I have switched the rendering style from hair to subsurface profile so now I get the look I wanted from the start

Good deal. I’m glad you got it resolved.
