Im making a game with a similar technique of Pillars of Eternity, but more with sprites and collages:
This is different than what im doing, its just a reference.
My 3D characters will walk on top of several images overlayed. In my case these sprites face perpendicular to the camera, like most isometric games.
So far, i cant figure out a way to create a shadow without a floor.
And if i create a floor then i hide whats behind the floor.
If i place sprites on top of the floor.
Then it hides the floor and the shadows.
So I saw this video and this gave me hopes. But i have no experience with the sequencer. Can this be done for actual gamedev?
Can i capture the shadows of my character and render them anywhere even without a floor?
