How do i get VR preview to work in 5.6

I cant get my vr play modes to work in my project. I start by adding the plugin openxr , then add the vr template to my project. I then set the game mode to the vr game mode. From there if i hit play (stand alone) Steam takes control and you only view steams default grid world… the unreal window is open on the desktop monitor only and you are not controlling it.

If i try to do vr preview play mode… either the same thing happens or the vr head view seems to try to control both at the same time.. flashing between steam and my unreal with a very laggy window with black borders that dont go along with the head fast enough. Extremly laggy. Not working.

Heres the thing.. if i install a vr project from the start.. it seems to work fine. So whats up? What am i doing wrong? I am in unreal 5.6

Update: The default vr template seems to work randomly.. i tried changing it to dx 12 and it had hte same issues.. i tried changing it back to default and its hit or miss… after quitting steam and it auto launching steam. Sometimes im in vr in steam but my monitor shows the headset tracking the movement through the vr mirror display… and i hear the sound coming from the headset… Just the visual isnt in the headset… thats with vr preview mode… VR standalone just freezes it and u have to hit alt f4 to get out

Full build for vr template seems to work…

But full build from my project with vr has the same problem where it just hangs frozen on the screen but in the vr headset your stuck in steam vr…
