Hex tiles energy shield that follows the character's body mesh?

Hey there, I want to make an energy shield VFX for my character, for when they get hit with a blaster or something.

I’ve seen quite a few vids on youtube, but it’s always a spherical shield, and I really wanted the shield to follow the body mesh.

for example:

I like the sci-fi hexagonal pattern, but I’m not sure if that’s doable for following the body mesh. I also like that noisy lines going down, sort of indicating the shield is weakening

I’m thinking something like the second example in this video, but a hex pattern instead of the grid:

any ideas how I could do something like this?

Would it be possible with a triplanar projection for a hex texture?
