HDRI LIGHTING

Hello everybody!
While setting up an interior scene i’ve noticed that if i let HDRI skydome affect lighting it looks like light is coming from above, almost ignoring the ceiling.
Is it fine to use HDRI for interiors? Or is it supposed to be used for exterior?

Using HDRI (High Dynamic Range Imaging) is more common in outdoor scenes, as it allows for capturing realistic lighting from the environment, such as the sky and surrounding landscape, which enhances global lighting and shadows.

However, you can also use HDRI for interiors, but its effectiveness will depend on the type of scene. For interiors, the HDRI needs to be well adjusted to avoid excessive or inconsistent lighting, especially if there are many windows or large openings to the outside. In these cases, it can be useful to simulate natural light entering from outside, but for enclosed spaces or those with few openings, other light sources (such as artificial lights) tend to be more controlled and realistic.

In summary:

  • HDRI for exteriors: Very suitable, especially for natural lighting and open environments.
  • HDRI for interiors: Can be used if you have windows or elements that justify external light entry, but it needs to be properly adjusted so the light isn’t too intense or unrealistic.

Also, verify that the roof is properly placed because if it’s not, light can enter through the sides that aren’t properly sealed.
