GPU Crashed or D3D device removed

GPU Crashed or D3D device removed. tried everything I could thing of and looked at all the online recommendations but I still cannot fix this issue. Regrettably if I can’t find a solution to problem I will have no choice but to give up on UE altogether. I don’t look forward to this because I really love Unreal Engine and have for the last two or so years. Can any body help me?, please!

Try

  • Setting your windows power plan from balanced to performance.
  • Resetting your nvidia settings in the control panel
  • Setting Power Management mode from “Adaptive” to “Prefer Maximum Performance” can help stabilize to situation (inside of nvidia control panel Manage 3d settings).
  • If on a laptop make sure the dedicated GPU is set as default

Thank you for your reply will attempt settings tomorrow as I’ve been at this all day and am a little brain dead. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi, I’m having mostly the same problems and I tried these solutions, but they didn’t work.

What is your vram usage on your gpu during gameplay? If your are hitting your cards limit then it can sometimes lead to crashes. Try lowering the graphics settings and see 8f the errors persist.

Rivatuner and msi afterburner can also cause ue to crash.

I wish I knew. It’s not even getting past startup. I’ve literally never made a game in Unreal Engine ever. It won’t let me get beyond startup. And I don’t use either of those programs.

What are your pc specs. Maybe you don’t meet the requirements for newer versions of the engine hardware wise.

If not then try version 4.27.
5.0 and up can be rather taxing for pcs

Ok should be fine to run ue5

Check your preferred graphics processor in the nvidia control panel and windows graphics settings.
Make sure the 4060 is set and not the integrated graphics chip.

You can also set it from the command line in the engine

You can also try the studio version of the nvidia drivers, or a slightly older version of the drivers and see if that helps.

Setting the preferred graphics Processor didn’t work, gonna try Studio Drivers next. How do I find older NVIDIA drivers and how can I tell which one I should use?

Once you choose your gpu you can click view more versions.

Try 1 version older and see if it there is a difference. The latest isn’t always the most stable.

You will get a whole list of drivers by version number.

Okay, so I’m suddenly getting this error in the Epic Games Launcher:

LAUNCH FAILED
Could not launch Unreal Engine. Please verify installation.
Error Code: LS-0013

I don’t think it’s connected, just a brand new problem, but do I need to launch Unreal from the Epic Games Launcher? I already tried both verifying it and uninstalling and reinstalling.

Also Studio Driver didn’t work either. Should I try the older driver as well?

Yeah go back a version or two and see if there are any changes.

Also if you are getting errors in unreal then I would suggest checking if your hard drive is a 100% ok. If your engine install has been compromised in any way then that could suggest some form of data corruption

just in case try running some commands as admin to check your pc health

sfc /scannow

scan for windows integrity

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

short for Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) can check system files.

I might have a fix here for you, from my own experience since July I have tried this:

Filed 600+ crash reports.
Upgraded cpu to Ryzen 9 5950x
Upgraded c drive to 2 tb nvme m.2 Fury X
Upgraded ram to all the same sticks of Kingston Fury 64 Gb DDR4 Ram.
Upgraded spare drives to faster ssds.
Uninstalled/ installed Windows 30+ times (varied between 10 & 11)
Changed PSU to 1000W Gigabyte gold modular
Changed motherboard to MSI B550M Gaming Pro
Upgraded GPU to RTX 3080
Changed cables from PSU to power cables.
Added 8 more fans to case.
Done the tdr “fixes” a few thousand times in registry.
Tried 8 different bios on mobo.
Changed hdmi cables to higher quality.
Changed fuse for PSU.
Upgraded monitor to new 4K in case that was the issue.
Installed/Uninstalled every nvidea driver released since 2023 (both studio and game ready DDU used each time).
Tested on 5 other PCs.
Recreated game from scratch 3 times.
Used every version of Unreal Engine 5 that has been released (5.0 occasionally works for some reason (1 out of 5 times), I think its because my game uses plugins and assets I bought from the marketplace that dont work on 5.0 and Unreal Engine likes to remain useless to me, I cant use 5.0 with my VR template).
Turned power saving to performance in nvidea control panel.
Removed riva tuner from Afterburner.
Undervolted voltage in afterburner.
Uninstalled all other software.

I looked through my logs and it seems that unreal hasnt crashed upon load or when I have been working on my game between 11:23 and 14:37 on Thursdays for the last 3 weeks.

Were you trying to use Unreal Engine on a Wednesday?

Went back several driver versions and it’s still not working. And the scans didn’t find anything either.

13th & 14th gen Intels can also cause problems due to their instability. This could cause random crashes. The only fix is a bios update (which you should do anyway to stop CPU degradation due to errors in voltage delivery).

Another solution would be to test GPU under volting and see if the crashes go away

As a last ditch resort you can launch the editor with directx 11

The video says 30 series, but I have a 4090, will that change anything? Also, I still don’t have any projects, will that be a problem?

Well underclocking can help no matter the card if the crash is due to card instability. You are basically telling the pc to put less strain on the GPU.

If it can’t run at full load without problems then it might be defective.
How does it handle in other applications outside of unreal? Are they all stable?

Unfortunately benchmarking software doesn’t really test the cards in real world scenarios. Stuff like Furmark can even damage GPU’s, so there isn’t any way to be a 100% all is ok hardware wise.

The power supply should be able to power the GPU but you should check your build combination with a power supply calculator just in case.

A 4090, 64 gb or ram, 5950x, 2 x 4 tb drives, 2 x m.2 drives is getting pretty close to the 1000W limit.

The 40 series is also known for power spikes that can draw temporarily lots more power for a fraction of a second and depending on the manufacturer can have larger power draw if it’s a top model (msi suprim x etc)

On a basic bare bone model the power draw is 900w without any oc. A 5950x also has Precision Boost Overdrive that can draw extra power too. I wouldn’t be surprised if the instability could be caused by power strain.

If you have a power draw monitor that can be hooked up between the pc and power outlet then you could see if it’s hitting the PSU’s limit.

Underclocking would lower power draw so it might show if the power is the problem.

I don’t know what I did but it’s working now, I think.

Wait, I had uninstalled my NVIDIA driver, let’s see if it still works after I’ve installed this other one.
