Good fire distortion material or method

I have a fire in a barrel and I’d love to have some good-looking heat distortion. I’ve tried multiple methods. Taking the particle fire and using the distortion track (Cascade fire) and also doing a material that uses a water texture. I also looked at post-processing but need it to just one area (in sequencer render)

These create distortions but all are heavy-handed with very defined hard shapes, even after selecting alternate patterns or blurring externally.

Ideally, it would: smooth transitions so more of a continuous distortion, ability to finely control it, feathers off on sides, and allow an adjustable blend of the original background.

Any suggestions besides the basic first youtube videos?

Did you get this, when it was free?

Lots of good distortion there:

I will have a look, but suspect it’s just refraction.

Yes, one part of the emitter has a translucent material with refraction
