Global Illumination with dynamic light ?

Hi, we have a day/night cycle in our map, but the shadows are - as expected - black. Now, I have seen videos with day/night cycles and GI, but the google results are confusing to say the least. Can anybody either explain or give me a link that explains how to create dynamic sunlight with GI ? Thanks!

There isn’t really a great option for that yet, you can use a skylight to add some illumination to the shadows, and there’s updates to AO that can make things more realistic. For exteriors there’s a feature called Light Propagation Volumes (LPV) which is a dynamic GI system, however the quality is very poor though it can work to some degree on exterior scenes where most of the illumination is coming from direct light—in situations where you need a lot of bounce lighting it doesn’t work so well which is why it’s bad for interiors.

Dead Island 2 seems to be doing a good job though.

I pretty sure, they will not share their code to community and looks like LPV will not be finished by Epic(no updates from 4.3), so it’s useless.

I don’t know if they’re using dynamic lighting if they are then it works OK for that situation because it’s an exterior or because they’ve modified the GI system.

I thought they said it just wasn’t a near-future priority? From what I read they intend to move forward with a real-time GI solution but later down the road…please correct me if I’m wrong.

They said it’s all dynamic lighting. Plus in the gameplay video you can see it looks quite well in interiors as well.

My guess if they find a solution that has good performance and works across a number of platforms then they will integrate it, otherwise we’ll have to wait until the hardware is fast enough that currently known solutions work OK.

In the gameplay video when it goes inside the lighting is really bad–there’s not enough detail in the LPV for interiors, you can concentrate the quality onto a smaller area to get higher detail, but then further away you lose lighting. Outside is a different matter because there isn’t as much of an impact of GI since most of the lighting is direct from the sun.

Yea it’s dynamic. One of the developers from Yager posted about their solution in another of the GI threads here.

Judging by this thread they have the reflection captures enabled for dynamic lighting which is not an obvious feature to enable but other than that it seems they are not doing anything super fancy.

It’s more than likely they are using LPV’s and a Stationary Skylight and simply changing it’s colour to give some additional ambient lighting. Remember you CAN change Stationary light colour at Run-Time without having to rebuild too.

LPV’s work well enough for the meantime, and you can do some tweaking to get the right look. Both Lionhead and Epic have been working on them over time and Fable Legends looks utterly stunning (and it’s Xbox One) with it’s DGI. LPV’s are more than suitable for the meantime!
