Hi guys! I’m having trouble getting these dark shadows off of these sphere panels. The shadows are making the sphere look puffy and quilted. I want the panels to look flat. I have messed around with editing the material, editing the mesh, editing the sun direction and intensity, editing env. light settings, and editing multiple shadow settings. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Could you zoom in and share a visualization of what the object and world normals look like?
That definitly looks like an issue with your normals on each of the panels. That “puffy” feel is most likely shading, not the material itself. Please try the following:
-
Open the panel assets in Mesh editor, apply “Recompute Normals”, and set a high smoothing angle (around 180°)
-
You can also check all your normals aiming into the right direction using a 3D tool (like Blender)
-
As a quick test, assign a flat, unlit material to your panels, to rule out material issues. There should be no shadows with a flat material
-
For your ligthting, increase shadow bias a bit, so shadows stop sticking to every edge. Also, check your Skylight’s intensity level
-
As a last resort, you can merge the panels into one smooth sphere mesh, if you don’t need them to be separate
Inverting the normals worked! Thank you so much!!
