Here is a fancy checker grid material for doing blockout/greyboxing with style! Originally created for Uniblocks, but released as a separate asset to avoid downloading 3GB+ of files, if there is a need only for developer grid materials.
Features and nuances:
Triplanar UVs implementation is based on Visual Tech Art tutorial, so markup text always looks right, no mirroring
Lightweight enough textures (less than 2.7MB of VRAM)
Designed to work with Lumen lighting & reflections, but not fit for older lighting techniques
In case you’re making princess castle or pony world - worry not, Fancy dev grids got you covered with special pastel pink and azure grids
This is what I was looking for! I saw this asset somewhere in passing and couldn’t find it for a long time! Just a wonderful find. Please add to the tags “Bloking”, “Layout”, “Greybox”, “Blockout”. Without this, it is extremely difficult to find your wonderful product.
Noted - will fix tag words with next update, thanks!
Upd: ah, I can’t add any of those (except “Layout”) - list of tags simply don’t have those and I’m not allowed to add new tags there, only predefined list of allowed tags to pick from… will try to add those words to text description.
Tweaked triplanar UV to work on rounded surfaces at 45 degree angle (worst case for triplanar UVs). Not perfect, but good enough for work - previous version was causing artifacts (random polygonal lines).
Added two new grid colors - pastel pink & azure. In case you’re making princess castle or pony world - worry not, Fancy dev grids got you covered!
Added optional texture mask to have grid markup without “1m” text, only crosses. Example provided on “Documentation_and_demo” map.
Update to V3 is now live - please do a fresh install if possible or it will be a bit messy and confusing with the remaining files from previous version mixed with new ones.
What's new :
Added clear coat effect, so grids now have glossy appearance for maximum fanciness XD
Removed all “no fading” materials (redundant in most cases, you can turn back this effect manually in case its needed). This helped clear up materials folder, A LOT
Grid materials now looks bit different (polished ceramic) and heavier - 0.6MB → 2.7MB of VRAM. Still, not that bad (and you can reduce markup texture res from 2K to 1K if needed to make it 0.6MB again)
Added two new grids (markup) - no text, dense lines, good for background.
Updated demo map appearance for maximum fanciness!
A micro update - clear coat effect looks cool, but with distance reflections becomes distracting in situations like this (dark foreground and bright background). This update adding parameters to blur distant clear coat reflections:
