Failed to Merge Bones error when tying an animation to a skeleton

Summary

So I have a skeleton and an animation. Both are custom, one from AccuRig and the other from Move One. However, when trying to put the two together, I get a message Failed to merge bones, and whatever will press will either not work or destroy the existing skeleton that exists in the project (in other cases, this also messed up all my previous animations too).

This feels like a message that doesnt’ make much sense because it doesn’t really help in any way, nor it tells you how to fix the problem, it just messes it up even more.

I am annoyed because in 4 different cases and 4 different projects, this has been an issue for me and the only workaround is to delete everything and start again, but that shouldn’t be the solution. I am probably missing something.

Steps to Reproduce

Import a UE4 mannequin and tie it to an animation that has a different bone structure

Expected Result

Ability to retarget on the spot and fix the difference in bones, so that the animation works with the skeleton you assign it.

Observed Result

Failed to merge bones error message, none of the three choices actually help, some of the choices are also destructive for the overall project.

Platform(s)

PC
