Failed to load map! XYZ.umap appears to be an asset file

Summary

Have the issue today that after computer shut down unexpectedly, I have two new errors constantly in UEFN, of which the primary is the error:

Failed to load map!
////////Uers/XYZ/Documents/FortniteProjects/ZYX/Plugins/ZYX/Content/ZYX.umap appears to be an asset file.

Now although the island loads after giving 2nd error:
Unreal Editor Security
Opening this project may execute files that could be harmful to your computer.
Do you trust the author of the files in the project XYZ?

I click yes, because of course I’m the author of the project and know the files are save? (But why first of all it’s asking this question for all my projects now?)

Then the island loads, but the .umap level is completely gone and not loading. The assets are there, and so on, but the island design is gone. When you go to the Project Folder the .umap file is still the the project folder, but it doesn’t show up in the Content Browser, all while the HLOD file for the level is still in the Content Browser.

Anyone else have this issue?
We were at the last iterations of this game, and was going to publish it tomorrow, but now all our hard work over the last 3 months is gone.

Steps to Reproduce

Don’t know. . . . Our computer shut down unexpectadly, which it’s been doing more frequently since the last two updates of UEFN, even with a 3080ti graphic card the system runs super hard with UEFN open, and if Fortnite at the same time to test the game, it gets buggy and crashes. Today UEFN crashed several times as well, and tongith our computer crashed, and when we restarted UEFN to continue working, we had these 2 new issues popup.

Expected Result

The above to mentioned issues.

Observed Result

Already mentioned above.

Platform(s)

PC

Island Code

Unpublished. In UEFN.

Additional Notes

How does one solve this issue? No one else in UEFN is reporting this as of yet, there are only UE5 users who have reported the issue but mostly no solve for it, but an unreal update fixed some cases. The others reported it’s a version incompatibility, but how do we control versions in UEFN and switch between different version of UEFN to see if that solves the problem?

hi @Belastrah ,
Firstly make sure you are not using OneDrive the default for Windows 11 in any path
If you have Revision Control running go back to the last good Sync and restore.
Next

Run command shell in Administrator
C:> chkdsk/f C:
to check and repair file system after unexplainable crash of Windows 11/10 on a clean restart

run “Verify” on UEFN/Fortnite
Verifying UEFN

Finally turn off DX12

[Solved] How to fix Fatal Errors in UEFN related to Graphic Cards and Shaders and Derived Data problems

In a follow-up to the above, I thought it can be helpful for other users to know:

Some fixes by @Jimbohalo10 below worked to solve the problem:

  1. Verify UEFN
  2. One of the only options is to go back to one of your Revision Control versions of your map. In our case, we lost 24 hours of work, which was half our map work, so that meant we could not publish our map in time for Halloween. Since the map was for Halloween, we missed our deadline and now the map is kind of useless since it’s on a Halloween topic. Lesson Learned: We try to save our changes via Revision Control every 30 minutes. It’s a sleb to remember, but its helpful.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS

  1. The UEFN editor is crashing less often after updated 32.00.
  2. But after Update 32.00 all our Vehicle Service Stations have dissapeared from the public map, and can’t get them to work in UEFN.
  3. When UEFN is active, CPU goes to 95% consistently, which if run 12 to 15 hours like we do, can cause computer crashes. We found additional cooling via an external fan helpful, and saving and closing the UEFN editor every 2 to 3 hours to be helpful.
  4. Ensure Nvidia drivers are up to date. Express install seems to be buggy. Do a custom install to ensure the latest drivers are installed correctly. After updating to the lastest Nvidia drivers, we’ve had less crashes, although, it did not completely stop UEFN editor from crashing at least once a day.

SUMMARY

  1. In summary, we don’t know of any solutions at the moment to repair a corrupted .umap file. If someone found a solution, please let us know.
  2. The option we had to go for was to use the last saved version of our map in Revision Control.
  3. We now implement some counter measures as mentioned above to help saveguard our work.

Hope this helps.
Happy building!

I’m sorry to hear you are having the same problem @BRUNAGAMER . Did you find a solution? We didn’t as of yet find a solution to repair the .umap once it is corrupted. We had to revert changes back to the latest Revision Control that was saved.

@Jimbohalo10 Thank you Jim!

You could delete the file via windows explorer with UEFN closed, open it and make a snapshot, then go back to an earlier snapshot and copy the assets, return to the latest snapshot and paste.
