Failed to load map! .umap appears to be an asset file.

I searched all other topics but nothing from current version of UE 4.15. My problem started as a export/migration issue but to trouble shoot I decided to start from scratch. Now it happens with the VR project template. I choose new project in UE 4.15 and choose the VR template. I tried both minimal settings without starter content and with high settings for Desktop builds. On the first load it works fine. When I close the project without any changes or saves and open it again it brings the map error. So after the first load the map does not work. I have windows 10. Do I need to post other specs?

On top of this, Other files that are in the directory are not visible by the editor.

Hello cheesepants,

I have been unable to reproduce this issue on our end. I have a few questions for you that will help narrow down what issue it is that you are experiencing.

Quick questions:

  1. Does this occur with all projects?
  2. Could you provide the exact error message that you are seeing?
  3. Could you try Verifying your engine and let me know if this helps?
  4. Could you try deleting your saved and intermediate folders?
  1. It occurs on all UE 4.15 projects mine and the example files. I have not downloaded 4.14 but I had a 4.11 project and everything works fine.

  2. The exact error message is:
    Failed to load map!
…/…/…/…/…/…/Users/Cheesepants/Documents/UnrealProjects/MyProject/Content/VirtualRealityBP/Maps/StartupMap.umap appears to be an asset file.

  3. I did a verify and that did not help.

  4. Deleting intermediate and saved folders does not change the situation.

I think there is a association problem. I manually did associate the file with the .exe file and but the editor still had problems recognizing it. So I have to continually click on the unreal engine file to open my project. I saw there was an update with bug fixes. After I updated the launcher had a pop up to fix associations and everything worked fine. How can I fix the launcher so that it knows how to open my files correctly? If that pop up came every time there is an issue I would be set.

So problem solved, maybe because of the update. I am just wondering what made the pop up come up? For future reference and other people having similar issues. There has to be a way to force the editor to bring the fix now, pop up menu .

I am happy to hear that your issue has been resolved. I have provided a link to another thread in regards to having the popup for association come up. I hope that this information helps.
