Face Generation

How to generate a high-quality human face with Reality Capture?

  1. Minimual number of images required?
  2. Optimal conditions for capturing human faces?
  3. Is human skin too glossy for Photogrammetry?
  4. If 3. is the case, any methods to reinforce the generation (e.g. image preprocessing…)?

Hello @JesseJiang010

  1. Basically, the minimal amount of images is 2. But this won’t be enough. For such thing you will need to follow the basic photogrammetry recommendations, which can be find here: Introduction to Photogrammetry | Course. Then it all depends on used camera, lens, distance form the face, overlap.
  2. For optimal capturing you will need to use camera rig which will capture all images in the same time. Also, it would be good to have lighting without shadows and not shiny face. You can also use the layers workflow there. Also, capture without hair or beard.
    1. Basically yes, but you can use make-up for example or mentioned layers workflow

Thank you so much for your answer, @OndrejTrhan.

  1. In my specific use case, capturing faces is challenging when the object is solid. Therefore, I’m trying to filter out motion-blurred images and limit the number of input images to mitigate noise effects.

  2. While a camera rig is ideal, I also want to make the capture environment portable.

Further Questions:

  1. Due to certain constraints, I need to avoid physical approaches like make-up. Instead, I’m focusing on image preprocessing to enhance point matching in Reality Capture. Are there any image processing methods that can make human skin more recognizable in Reality Capture?

  2. Following up on question 4, I noticed that most matches in the Show Matches view in IMAGE 2D VIEW are on clothes with colorful patterns. Should I avoid wearing clothes with colorful textures to ensure Reality Capture matches more points on human skin?

  3. Is it possible to get direct support for Reality Capture with payment? To my knowledge, Epic Direct Support is only available for teams with more than ten Unreal Subscription seats. While I don’t need that many subscriptions, I am willing to pay for direct support. It would be extremely helpful if I could ask questions directly and share specific datasets and related files with Reality Capture experts. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for your support.

  1. In that case you can use the polarization filters during capturing your images: Light Polarization | Course. Or you can check something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5iETmNj-TA
  2. Not avoid. Those part will help you to get better alignment of your images, as there is more features
  3. For direct support you need to follow those rules. For more information you can contact our Sales.
