I am running into this same issue.

The thread was closed, but linked a bug report that states its scheduled to be fixed in 5.8. Now that 5.8 has been exposed on github, I was wondering anyone could point me to the commit or branch for this fix. Would love to cherry pick it in if possible.

We have not fixed the bug. I think one of the most likely changes for it to work is reverting the change mentioned in the original thread and to move from using weak ptrs to FSoftObjectPath. It is the old behavior for pre-5.6 versions. I do not foresee us getting a fix out in time for 5.8 release, and it may be some time before it gets addressed.
