Hi,
There may be a step being missed here that may explain some of this.
Here are my steps when creating a cloth asset that have worked for me:
-
Create cloth plane with lots of verts for cloth simulation
-
apply a material (important, and needed to make cloth work. Do not rely on default material or it will not work)
-
Create Bone for the cloth plane
-
add skin modifier to the cloth and select bone
-
Add the PhysX cloth modifier via the PhysX toolbar
-
Paint weight accordingly for your cloth and test the simulation so that it looks correct for your intentions
-
Select the cloth and bone and export selected as an FBX
-
Keep these selected and export again using the file type PhysX and APEX (.APB)
-
Next we’ll import these into UE4
-
Import the FBX for the cloth skeletal mesh
-
Open the Skeletal mesh and use the tab for Clothing and import the APB file here.
These are the steps that work for me.
Let me know if these work for you as well.
Thanks!
Tim
What version of the plugin are you using? You can record your video tutorial?
I’m using the 3.0.1 DCC plugin.
Do these steps above not work for you?
There is one thing in my steps that was incorrect though (sorry, did it from memory as it’s been a while since I have messed with Cloth)
The one step difference was step 8. Don’t export selected. Export the scene and use the settings I use in the video.
Here is a quick vid of the process:
Let me know if that works for you.

All the same mistake, made exactly like the video. Used: NVIDIA PhysX For Autodesk 3ds Max 2015 64bit 3.02.01024.04200, 3ds max 2015 and Unreal Engine 4.6.1, windows 8, on the other versions of the engine is also it error
error also when using dcc plugin 3.0.1 with 3ds max 2014
It is my cloth file, Dropbox - cloth.FBX - Simplify your life
Dropbox - clothapex.apb - Simplify your life
What version of the engine are you using? Error is still the same, Failed to import APEX clothing asset from selected file
Not sure what I’m supposed to see here as everything appears to be working as intended (?).
I’ve imported the FBX > Opened the Cloth Skeletal Mesh > Used the clothing tab to import the cloth asset > then select the material and assign the cloth apb asset to the material.
This is the result:
Am I missing something that’s not working on your end? If so, can you post some screen shots where you think the hiccup is happening?
Your files I also cannot import, maybe error in import settings engine? Or error due to windows 8? You use windows 7?
I’m using Windows 8.1.
Are you using the same import settings as in my video?
These are the settings I used. All default settings.
I know the project you’re using looks like a blank starting project. Can you test this in a new project and see if maybe there is something corrupt possibly with this one?
If that’s still giving an issue, are you able to make a video of your import process with my files or yours (since both worked on my machine)?
Let me know.
I create a new project, import settings by default, anyway error (((
how to find out what exactly the error, it can have the logs, if so, where to find them?
- If you’re using a source build from GitHub can you try recompiling that.
- If you’re using the binary version from the launcher can you go to the library tab and click on your engine version with the down arrow and choose the option “Verify.”
For the logs, you can go to the project folder > Saved > Logs > and attach the latest log where you’ve tried to import and it throws the error.
Thank you very much for your help, I found the problem, in the way the project was signed cyrillic folder
Oh, wow!
That was not something that had even occurred to me. I’ll run a test with this in a little while and if I’m seeing the same on my end, I’ll get that reported. I’m sure it has to mess with some other systems as well and not just cloth.
Thanks for letting me know that. I’ll update here once I get a bug report in for that after testing for reference.
I’ve been working with IT today and we’ve setup and were able to reproduce this error.
I’ve entered a bug report for this with ticket number UE-8658.
Thanks for you help in tracking this down.
