ERROR: Cook failed. EXCEPTION_STACK_OVERFLOW

Hello I’ve had this problem for 2 days now and I can’t figure it out. This project was building a few days ago. Im not sure what I changed that caused this Stack Overflow in the Cook process. The game works fine in Standalone mode without crashing, but when I cook the project it gets a Stack overflow.

Is this circular dependency issue? Another possible issue is that I have multiple Data Tables referenced in the Player Controller that cause the “Size Map” of my PlayerController to be large. For example my 19.1 GB disk size. 10.7GB memory size. I have been converting hard references to soft references where I find them. It built earlier this week and I haven’t added a bunch of assets to those data tables though, which makes me think it’s not this.

Had the same problem a while ago. Refactoring blueprints to reduce dependencies resolved it for me. Use the Reference Viewer to figure out where you have assets depending on many others. There’s a cyclic dependency detector Marketplace asset as well I believe. Alternatively you could attach a debugger to the cooking process and inspect the callstack when the crash happens.

In my case the stack overflow didn’t happen every time the project was cooked, seemingly because the load order during cooking wasn’t always the same. I think I recently saw a console command that had something to do with a cook order random seed.

19GB size map for the PlayerController sounds like it’s way too much but depends on the overall size of your project I guess. Mine has approximately 100MB right now (by far the biggest one being a 45MB disksize/90MB memorysize placeholder texture) which is about 10% of the projects content folder total size.

I honestly until today havent been thinking about circular dependencies. Thank you for your plugin recommendation. It shows I have 300+ circular deps.

I ended up solving this a few days later. The issue was a bad Blueprint widget asset that was being referenced in my PlayerController. The widget would open and compile fine but something about it was cursed and removing references to it allowed the cooker to complete successfully.
