In China, for various reasons, a massive number of gamers use VPNs/proxy software or game boosters, such as Flclash. Currently, there is an issue with the Epic Launcher: if a user has a proxy/VPN tool running, a “network error” popup will appear upon entering the Epic Launcher. However, if the user turns off the proxy/VPN, the Epic Launcher opens normally.
This issue is consistently reproducible. You can easily replicate it simply by opening the Epic Launcher while a VPN/proxy tool is running. A large number of users in the China region are experiencing this problem.
This issue did not happen in previous versions; it only started occurring after a recent Epic update. In the past, having a VPN/proxy tool open while entering the Epic Launcher caused no issues whatsoever.
I strongly suspect the root cause lies in your recent program update: It seems requests intended for LocalHost’s Epic Online Services (EOS) are being mistakenly routed directly to the system proxy. Because of this, even if EOS is running normally, it cannot receive the Launcher’s requests. Consequently, the Launcher receives a 502 error, mistakenly assumes there is an issue with EOS, and continuously throws error popups.
We’re sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with the EOS services appearing to be unavailable. Can you provide me with an update on whether you are still experiencing this?
I just experienced the same issue: when using a VPN client, I received a message saying “Epic Online Services unavailable” while logging into the Epic Launcher, but everything returned to normal after I disconnected from the VPN. Mainland China
This VPN issue seems to have started a few days ago(may be start from 6/17 or 6/18?), and a large number of users across Asia are encountering it. I followed the official EOS troubleshooting guide to clear the cache, yet it did nothing to resolve the problem.
It would be best to ask your operations team to verify whether any network modifications or EOS service update deployments have been implemented recently.Additionally, please coordinate with your staff who are connected to the Chinese domestic network to assist with troubleshooting this VPN network issue.
Here’s another piece of auxiliary information that may help with troubleshooting: lot of users in China use the “Clash” client to establish VPN connections.
The issue seems to have disappeared on my end. I can now log in normally even with my VPN turned on, so I’m not sure if you made any changes to your backend servers.
However, I am certain that when I first reported this problem, turning off the VPN was the only way to avoid the ‘epic online services unavailable’ error. Furthermore, it looks like other users in this thread are encountering similar issues, so please investigate the recent updates related to EOS and networking.
I tried reinstalling the launcher just now. The problem still exists.
And why were my game files deleted when I removed the launcher?
Before this, I just couldn’t use the donkey launcher. Now I can’t even play my offline games!
