Dynamic Material Layer

I once saw a youtube video that I can no longer find where someone created a laser weapon that would paint a mesh with a burning glow as the player dragged the laser across its surface.
I need to recreate that, can anyone point me in the right direction?

That video was just posted on the Unreal Engine YouTube video during GDC.

To my knowledge it was someone showing off their work though I wouldn’t be surprised if there was anything similar out there. Still, any idea how to do it?
