Never done it, but I’d take baby steps:
- control character
- control character with animations
- put weapon in character hand
- swing weapons
- swing weapon and hit static targets
- swing weapon and hit targets stuck to other characters
- propagate damage from getting hit
- sound effect on hit
- particle effect on hit
- weapon hit weapon (blocking?)
I’d go way into animation tutorials at the start. That’s 90% of decent combat system.
