Distance Field quality settings for Distance To Nearest Surface node

Hello, I’m trying to use the Distance To Nearest Surface node in my material, it works ok when the camera is near the object, but I need to render it from a distance, when I move the camera away, the quality becomes degraded and the effect completely un-useable.
I am not concerned with optimisation or efficiency since this is for an offline render, but I have no idea what setting / parameter needs to be modified to keep the distance fields at the same quality level from far. Any advice would be much appreciated.

one of the main issues was that I had a large mesh under my landscape with large exposed backface surface, which was contributing a lot of junk distance field info, disabling distance fields for this mesh helped, but it would be good to figure out how to control distance from camera quality settings.
