Displaced Mud Effect with Metahuman and sequencer

I want to create a displaced mud effect to match the footsteps of my metahuman character.

I tried following this tutorial so far. but reach the point where it should start painting to the render target and I just had a circle in the corner of the plane and it wasn’t following the foot.

but It’s for cinematics only so the metahuman will use animation clips in the sequencer.

I’ve looked at achieving it outside of Unreal but have since metahumans got to Maya without their clothes. I lose the accuracy, plus the ability to quickly change the animation or positions.
