[DEVLOG] Our First Steps with Unreal Engine 5 – Indie Project in Progress

Hey everyone! :waving_hand:

We’re a small indie team currently diving into Unreal Engine 5 for the first time, and we’re thrilled to share a bit about our journey so far.

:video_game: Project Overview
We’re working on a third-person action-adventure game that blends stylized visuals with fast-paced combat and puzzle-solving mechanics. Think classic Zelda meets a touch of Soulslike difficulty — but approachable for newcomers.

:wrench: Why Unreal Engine?
We chose Unreal Engine 5 because of:

  • Nanite for detailed environments
  • Lumen for dynamic global lighting
  • Blueprints + C++ hybrid workflow
  • A vibrant and helpful community (yes, you guys!)

:sparkles: Progress So Far

  • Character locomotion with root motion animations :white_check_mark:
  • Dynamic lighting setup with weather transitions :cloud::sun_behind_small_cloud:
  • Custom enemy AI using Behavior Trees :alien_monster:
  • Inventory and quest system in early prototyping :package:

:test_tube: What We’re Learning
Every day comes with a new challenge, from mastering animation blending to learning replication for future multiplayer support. We’ve faced performance hiccups, material glitches, and AI pathfinding bugs — but it’s been a rewarding ride!

:speech_balloon: We’d Love Feedback
If anyone has experience optimizing stylized scenes in UE5 or tips for AI performance on mid-range devices, we’d love to hear your input.

We’ll be sharing screenshots, videos, and behind-the-scenes details in upcoming posts. Thanks for reading and being part of such an inspiring community!

:rocket: Stay tuned!
