Dead End: Open World Survival Game

Thank you TJ Ballard, We will keep showing it off as more comes in! Thanks for your feedback!

So its been a little while since an update, but we are still at work, although its been a bit slow lately. I have been working on a gas station, but the textures will be reusable everywhere so it will save time later. The textures are taking the most time, the brick is sculpted in ZBrush and baked, then painted in photoshop. As you can imagine this is time consuming to make, and make it look right. The concrete texture is photosourced from multiple references, with a bit of handpainting and a macro variation mask in the shader. The other materials are just a combination of photosource, modeling, and handpainted parts.

As for the game development, we have gotten a lot more ideas and we feel that we can definitely stand apart from games like Day Z and the newly announced H1Z1, more on this tomorrow.

We hope you guys like the updated stuff, please note its all WIP though. We are still looking for help, so if you have experience and a good attitude just let us know by going to our website or add me on AIM and send me a message

Thanks!

Hey everyone,

We wanted to share some exciting news that Dead End will have a class system, along with a skill system. We feel these systems will help separate us from the usual zombie survival game. Each class is based on a real world profession (Cop, Ex-Soldier, Doctor, etc). Choosing a profession will give you starting bonuses to certain skills. For example, choosing the Cop profession would give you a starting bonus to things like Small guns. Each skill will benefit gameplay and encourage teamwork as well as adding replayability. As you use a skill it will level up, so if you want to be good at something, you just do it. As your skills level up, you character will level up.

All players will have the same skills, meaning it is fair for every profession. The only point of the professions are to give players starting bonuses based on how they want to play. If you want to start off by playing a ‘warrior’ type character, you might pick the Ex-Soldier profession, but maybe later you want to play more stealthy, no problem, just start playing stealthy, and you will get better at it as you go.

While we do planning on adding Permadeath, we decided for skills, it wouldn’t be fair. (Who would want to spend all the time and effort to reach 100 in a skill, just to die and restart?) So we figured, each time you die you will take a hit to your skills, this is to make sure people still think about their in game actions before doing things, and to think of the consequences.

We don’t have everything set in stone yet, and the professions and skills will change all along the way, to ensure fun and balanced gameplay.

Here is a small taste of the skills we are considering now:

1.Strength

2.Small Guns

3.Big Guns

4.Medicine

5.Crafting

6.Archery

We hope you guys are as excited about this as we are, and we will have more to come later down the line!

WOW! This looks awesome! Can’t wait to see more. Love the idea of implementing a class system.

Thanks Sean!

We are working hard with the class system and i’m sure you guys are gonna love it! This is only the beginning, just wait!

Great work, so far assets looks great

Hey guys, just wanted to stop in and let everyone know we are alive and still working (well the team has dwindled a lot and only two people are working currently, me and our web designer). So things have been going slow, but we are definitely still working and definitely plan to still release the game at some point in the future. Our main problem has been finding dedicated people who are good at what they do, most people just stop coming online, or leave for no reason, etc. I have taken a new approach to the art, I have been working on a series of tileable textures, and I am at 43 right now. These are all PBR textures and will be reused heavily through out the game, so I want to make sure they look good. As always they are WIP until the game is released (as everything is, nothing is final until the game is done). Everyday through either other video games, pictures, videos, and even real life just walking around I get ideas for more textures. Something I have learned from working on this game and studying other games is, video game development is a lot about compromise. Obviously I can’t have unique textures for everything in the world, its just not feasible for an open world game, so the goal I am going after is, lots of tileable textures at a high quality, that won’t be too apparent after reusing them numerous times.

I have also taken things back a step and am getting more organized. Just to let everyone know the plan, I am going to be working on the shape of the map, the size, where things are, what locations will show up, etc. All of this will be decided before modeling anything, just to make sure we have a solid goal to work towards, opposed to randomly modeling things and hoping they work out. I can say that I have personally learned a lot so far, and hope to learn more, and I can’t wait to show everyone what we have in store for the future!

Thanks for the support

Hey everyone, sorry for the delayed update, it was planned for yesterday but we decided to do it today to show off a few more things.

Well today we had our first proper multiplayer test, we have guns in game, with animations, a test level, AI, rag doll physics, bullet penetration, and a lot of basic plumbing. We were going to do a video but we need to find the right capture software (free and works good haha). Things are going a lot smoother and a lot faster now, we have a new member, a programmer, named Luis. Luis has done a lot lately in a short period of time and we should have more updates coming more frequently. We are coming up with more ideas daily, and have some things planned for you guys to follow us along in the development process, and see exactly where we are at any point in time, completely transparent. We will talk more about this in future updates as we haven’t worked it out fully yet. As always we are interested in new members, just send us an email as or add me on AIM at . Don’t forget to check out our site and sign up while you are there:

Now for everyones favorite part, pictures haha.

Here is our test level:

Here are some in game shots, you can play in first person or third person, V changes your view point.

And I recently reworked the AKM as it had some bad areas, visually (There are still things to be done to the new one though, texture wise). Here is the new one, I will be reworking a few more guns to bring them up to par as well.

I’m eager to see where this goes  Looking forward to some game play footage
Keep up the hard work !

Hey MrNexy, thanks for the interest! We hope to get some testing footage out next week, obviously just very basic stuff, but videos are something we want to start doing frequently!

Thanks

Definitely liking the direction this is going! Looking forward to more updates

Thank you Fakado!

See you there =)

Hey guys, I am working on a house and I thought I would drop some screen shots here to show you guys.

Right now, the uvs are really messed up (haven’t unwrapped everything), and there are no smoothing groups. This is just to show you guys how a house could look in game. There is full interior and exterior, the interior has multiple rooms, a kitchen, a basement, laundry room, bathrooms, a living room, etc. The interiors of our houses will be detailed with things like moulding (trim), columns, closets, and various other things.

Here are some exterior shots to show you guys the scale.

EDIT: I should also add, the first person arms are placeholder, our animator has been using them and we will use the rig for our arms when we create them (there won’t be a GPS or anything)

In the first image, the upper left two windows feel very dull and I feel like the house could as a whole benefit from some bedazzle.
In the second image, the two windows on the top right of the house seem far too close to each other. I’d imagine windows would be slightly separated in distance from each other and the corners of the building. The back of the house at the lower portion also feels very empty, perhaps a storage room or something could fill a part of the space without cluttering?

Sorry if I’m being too straightforward >_< Looking forward to updates!

Hey Fakado!

No not at all we like when we get some feedback it only makes the game better when we hear what players want to see. Im going to pass your feedback to our designers, if you could repost on our fourms.deadendthegame.com under game suggestions it will be great so we can keep record of it!

Thank again for your input keep it coming!
