Dark Forum Theme Beta

Hey folks,

We’re introducing the dark theme in beta today and would love to hear your feedback. Please let us know what suggestions you have for us in this thread. We’re primarily looking for color and feel at this stage, but if you have additional feedback, please feel free to share.

To enable the dark theme, click “EpicForum Style” at the bottom of the page and select Unreal Engine [Dark] BETA.

Thanks!

Looks really nice
(Maybe just change the white font color of the thread titles to the same nice gray of the sub forum titles  )

The only thing that is extremely hard to see are bolded thread titles (i.e. threads with new posts). Probably best to just give them a slightly more yellow-ish tint.

So far so good!
Thank you!

Something isn’t right with this update. The pagination for long topics no longer works, and on my phone I can’t post or dismiss notifications…

Nice work, looks quite consistent

If you’re working on the color scheme, it would be great to make a few general tweaks.

  1. Lower the contrast of non-important elements. Link colors in footers shouldn’t be radioactively blue. It stands out, make short posts more difficult to read.
  2. I’d make all those titles like “Visionary” and “Champion” greyed out. I don’t need this information at all, it’s weird and childish. But some people like it - could we just remove bright colors so the thread won’t look like a christmas tree?

Change #2 would make #3 easier to achieve.
3) And Epic members should be marked by special color (maybe by special background color/shadow of the “post author” section?), not this tiny and ugly badge. This way we would quickly notice this quite important information.

Once again, look at GOG forums. It’s super clean and easy to read. Could we get a bit closer to such usability, please?

While you’re making changes, maybe you could remove member’s “join date”?

Glad you all are liking it so far and I appreciate the feedback! I’ve logged the issues with our team, so hopefully we can get those addressed ASAP.

Also, thank you so much for your patience. I know this theme has been a long time coming.

It is unlikely that I am going to ever use a dark theme, but having one is definitely a must and it is good to see that it is being worked on.

Hey @Amanda.Bott I am unable to find the previous forum feedback thread so I hope you don’t mind if I drop these here:

  1. Please mirror the pagination at the bottom to the top. Right now if a thread has multiple pages at the bottom of the page you can just click each page, but on top you have that annoying input field where you have to enter the page number.
  2. Please please please add page numbers directly below threads in the forum index like the old forum used to have. Now I have to go hunting for the little blue arrow in the “last post” column in order to jump to the end of the thread.

The “New Topics” button doesn’t work anymore.

The pagination and new topics issues are fixed. Are you still having problems with the notifications?

I’ll add those to the list! Thanks

No, they work now; thanks again!

All working again for me aswell

There are still a ton of bright spots though.

Overall I think this theme looks slightly better, without all the unnecessary rounded corners / gradients: UnrealForums Dark Theme - Community Content, Tools and Tutorials - Unreal Engine Forums

Got an interesting notification that doesn’t actually work:

Deleting a post causing a bugged notification certainly sounds like a bug to me, it should delete it then.

It is great to see this, thanks! I know this is still WIP but S-ed’s Dark Theme looks great enough already. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Why not just ask him to use it? Or make a similar one. The font color, non space wasting top search bar, different sticky icon, new threads with orange column in front, bold font name for new commented threads, “smooth” color scheme. It is just a genius design overall!
Edit: this is what I’m talking about

So much happier now. Still a few issues as others have pointed out by my eyes genuinely thank you for implementing this.

About the colors:
You have a yellowish-accent color used across the design. I think it should be a little more orange/brown and look less golden.

And also, currently, thread titles of new threads are styled bold in the (sub) forums. I personally think this does not draw enough attention. For this reason I would like to suggest that you gray out the title of old/read threads, so that new threads are easier distinguished.

For some reason notifications don’t dismiss anymore and posting is broken again on my phone.
