CRITICAL: Landscape material is completely broken

Summary

My Landscape material/ layers are destroyed in new update

Stability

Steps to Reproduce

My custom made landscape material that looked great for 2 years is completely destroyed with the 42.00 update.

Expected Result

Proved and tested work should not be undone by engine updates. If this can’t be fixed, years of work are lost and I have to think about quitting UEFN.
Engine updates should be tested before release, at least the basic function.
I am dreading every update lately , because I never know if and what won’t work suddenly. This is very frustrating and not sustainable.

Observed Result

Right now, the landscape paint is ruined. It looks as if the layer masks are the problem. Also the roughness maps seem to have gone away, the landscape is as glossy as glass.

Could we get an island code so we can investigate?

Hi @Flak , I uploaded a private version, code is

5828 8601 5377.

If it helps your investigation, I can be more specific: The vertical cliff faces are way too glossy, even though the roughness texture is still in place. The transitions between the cliff (rock) material and the gravel and grass materials have changed, probably due to a problem with the layer paint masks. There are strange dark spots all over the grass material.

I am almost sure that the layer paint masks are the cause for he dark spots, they occur were layers meet. Painting layers behaves strange, too.

So I did some digging, and in deed there was extensive changes done on the landscape, including paint layer blend mode, in this update.

After the transition to advanced weight blending in version 38.00 I decided to keep the legacy weight blending so I would not loose previous work, and that was no problem until now. The AI says to change the DefaultEngine.ini file with the command line posted in the version update documentation, but I can’t get that to work because the AI is halluzinating folders that are not there , and a Windows search did not turn that file up either.

It would be great if someone from the support team can help me out with the detailed steps how to change that .ini file so I can keep the legacy weight blend mode for my landscape paint layers if you think that that would solve my problem.

Thanks!

My map Freebuild island also broken

Do you have the same errors, weird landscape paint blending?

I can’t check the proj rn, but I playtested the published map and it has blackpatches on the landscape which previously was completely fine.

Is the paint work on the landscape older, previous version 38.00, and do you use a custom made landscape material. too? Sorry to hear you can’t open it. I guess we wait what Epic says.

Also, experiencing this issue with Landscape paint layers now having black spots or empty portions where layer painting looks to have been removed.

Originally, I was using No Weight Blend, Blend Method and that seems to be the only ‘fix’ for painting over any of these new black portions of the Landscape. Swapping the Blend Method to Weight Blending (Legacy) or Advanced Weight Blending looks to be removing any other paint layers around where you paint. So it just makes the black/empty portions of the layers even worse.

Yes, that’s what I am getting. My landscape rock material also got super glossy, probably caused by some unlucky material blending. That can be fixed temporarly by readjusting the roughness settings until this bug is fixed.

The status of FORT-1143246 changed to ‘Needs Triage’. We are routing this to the appropriate team for investigation.

@Reeyawn Could we get an island code so the team can investigate?

Hi @Flak ,

I uploaded a private version:

I removed most assets for easier inspection. For reference I added this old screenshot with the intact landscape material. You can see that the rocks are of course not glossy. Unfortunately I don’t have more screenshots to show before/ after, but especially the grass paint layer is messed up. Also some rock parts are dotted with tiny dark spots.

For reference here is a screenshot with the grass paint layer how it used to look.

I also should mention that the compile time for my custom made landscape material jumped from under 1 second to about 10 minutes. Not sure which update caused that, since I did not edit the material for many months. Maybe it happened with the introduction of substrate, but I don’t know.
