Creative Input Action can remain unbound after resetting controls, making Input Trigger experiences unplayable

Summary

A PC player using an AZERTY keyboard layout was unable to activate an Input Trigger assigned to Creative Input Action 13.

Custom 13 was unbound, and resetting all keyboard controls to their defaults did not restore the binding. Changing the Windows keyboard layout to QWERTY, changing Fortnite’s language, restarting Fortnite and rejoining the island also did not fix it.

The input immediately began working after the player manually assigned a key to Custom 13. This confirms that the island logic and Input Trigger Device were working correctly, but Fortnite provided no clear recovery path for the missing binding.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. On PC, use an account where Creative Input Action 13 is unbound. This was encountered by a player using an AZERTY keyboard layout.
  2. Join an island that uses Creative Input Action 13 for an Input Trigger.
  3. Attempt to activate the input using the key displayed on the HUD.
  4. Reset all keyboard controls to their defaults.
  5. Restart Fortnite and rejoin the island.
  6. Attempt to activate the input again.
  7. Open Keyboard Controls and scroll to Creative Input Actions.
  8. Manually assign a key to Custom 13.
  9. Return to the island and press the newly assigned key.

Expected Result

Resetting keyboard controls to their defaults should restore a valid binding for Creative Input Action 13.

The Input Trigger HUD should display the player’s actual functional binding, and pressing the displayed key should activate the Input Trigger.

If the action is unbound, Fortnite should clearly identify Custom 13 as unbound and direct the player to the correct settings.

Observed Result

Creative Input Action 13 remained unbound after resetting all keyboard controls to their defaults.

While testing in French, the HUD alternated between “Non attribué” and “Espace,” but Space did not activate the input. After changing to QWERTY, the HUD displayed Q, but pressing Q still did nothing.

The Input Trigger only began working after a key was manually assigned to Custom 13.

Additional Notes

The issue occurred consistently on the affected account until Custom 13 was manually assigned. It could not be reproduced on a separate account using a standard QWERTY configuration. The original cause of Custom 13 becoming unbound is unknown.

Although this issue was first identified with an AZERTY configuration, my broader concern is that the underlying problem could affect any player whose Creative Input Action becomes unbound. The failure is not necessarily limited to AZERTY keyboards.

I have not been able to verify whether other regional keyboard layouts, alternative keyboard configurations or previously migrated control settings can produce the same issue. If Reset to Default does not reliably restore Creative Input Actions, players using any keyboard layout could potentially encounter this problem.

This is especially concerning when a Creative Input Action controls a core gameplay mechanic. Players, particularly children and casual players, cannot reasonably be expected to know that an action labeled “Build” is connected to Custom 13 or how to repair that binding.

The current Input Trigger documentation also only lists Custom 1 through Custom 12, despite Custom 13 being available in Fortnite:

would actually love to have it instead of creative input action also available as standard input action so for example in the input device we would take the standard input action for emote. Every time a player than performs an emote we can do our action without having to rely on creative inputs to be bound.
