Creating smooth lighting and surfaces

I have always had pretty poor lighting results with bringing in complex objects or furniture. You can see in the attached chair, the results look pretty terrible after the lighting is built. I have messed around with my lightmaps a lot and can’t really seem to get any better results. And you can see the actual model in 3DS has a lot of faces that I can’t really seem to clean up or smooth. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for achieving smoother/better lighting results? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this has hindered my quality for a long time and can’t seem to crack through to make them any better.
